Pawan Kalyan Gabbar Singh Movie Review

When Dabangg was released a couple of years ago, the first reaction in Hyderabad was that the character played by Sallu would perfectly suit only one man in Tollywood: Pawan Kalyan. Later, when Pawan actually gave the nod for the remake script by Harish Shankar, it created unprecedented buzz in the industry. In fact, Pawan was so excited about the project that he was the one who suggested the title Gabbar Singh. Even the director tries to justify the title by showing how our hero is obsessed with the iconic character in Sholay. So in a flashback sequence, while the entire theatre would lap up the characters of Jay, Veeru or Basanti, our 10-yearold boy loves only Gabbar Singh. In fact, when he is forcefully taken away by his step-dad from the theatre, he feels that he is more like a villain than hero and changes his name from Venkatranam Naidu to Gabbar Singh. There it begins!
In terms of performance, the mind-blowing show is completely anchored by Pawan Kalyan. It is 90 per cent Pawan Kalyan. As it is directed by Pawan’s ardent fan Harish, he has succeeded in showing a different Pawan. Probably, we get to see this kind of Pawan after Khushi. Since there is no novelty element left in the story, the director has focused all his energy in creating punch dialogues. Most Pawan movies have a role tailor-made for his best friend Ali. So, here Ali plays ‘Samba’ for Gabbar Singh. Shruti Haasan plays her part in perfection. Abhimanyu Singh plays the villain role though his character seems to be an extension of Rakta Charitra.
In Andhra Pradesh, Gabbar Singh created a controversy about the way police are portrayed, leaving everyone wondering as why cops could take exception as there have been a number of movies that had actually shown them in poor light. Actually, the proof, as they say, is in the pudding. The moment Gabbar Singh is appointed the sub-inspector of Kondaveeti (remember his brother Chiranjeevi had famous flicks as Kondaveeti Raja and Kondaveeti Donga), he changes the name of Kondaveeti police station to Gabbar Singh police station. He calls his sub-ordinates as ‘Gabbar Singh ki fauzjiya’. While some police use third degree treatment for criminals, our hero makes them play antakshari inside the station to get the secrets out. And no surprises, he succeeds in his mission. Songs add glitter to the movie. If Munni.. had set the screens on fire in Hindi, Kyoon Keka.. has done the same in Telugu with Malaika sizzling with her steps. \Above all, it entertains Pawan’s fans.
Like the original Dabangg, it makes no bones about being what the story is.
As actor Allari Naresh tweeted, Pawanism is the word and Gabbar Singh is the most heard name since morning. Since Salman is busy doing sequel for Dabangg, we wonder if there will be a sequel for Gabbar Singh as well.
Pawan has already dropped hints in the film that it could be called ‘Jabbar Singh’ or ‘Rubber Singh. We can imagine what is in store!
